"You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." Morpheus, in the Matrix
Who we are is not definable. It cannot be placed in a nice box. It does not have a label that sums up the essence of our being in 140 characters, let alone a check box. We are individuals that navigate this world by our instincts and the whims of the free. We are aware of the injustices that plague this world. We take stands. We speak out. We let people know we are actually about that life. Every day we wake up and take the Red Pill that reminds us, we never lived in a time where complacency was a way of life. We know complacency is complicity in the destruction of our people, culture, and history. So, to put it simply…ain’t nobody got time for that.
Yet the magic in being multifaceted is that you are able to protest the murders of unarmed people of color by day and completely appreciate Cash Money taking over for the 99 and the 2000 by night. The chains of being one-dimensional do not bind us. We are able to pop that Blue Pill and lose ourselves in pop culture. We can twerk. Enjoy a glass of Henny with apple juice. In addition to spitting, all of the lyrics of DMX’s Its Dark and Hell is Hot with growls always on cue and it does not negate the fact that we are brilliant, beautiful, and dynamic.
This is the epitome of the Red Pill Blue Pill Collective. We are celebrating you and all of your complex glory.
Because some days we are Claire Huxtable.
Some days we are Cardi B or Meg Tha Stallion
Some days we are Angela Davis.
And that is okay.
